KESHO LEO SCIENCE SLAM 2019 | ITV and Dw project competition
EDUCATION
July 07, 2019
Kesho Leo Science Slam Tell us about the science project that will change the future! DW and ITV are looking for students and scientists-in-training to submit their projects for the Kesho Leo Science Slam. What is a Science Slam? A science slam is a scientific talk where participants present their own scientific research work in a given time frame in front of a non-expert audience. The focus lies on presenting scientific topics to a diverse audience in an entertaining way.

How can I participate?
The competition is open to participants based in Tanzania who attend a university or secondary school. Those chosen as finalists will present their project live at an event to be held on August 2 at the University of Dar es Salaam. If you are interested in participating, you will need to submit a short summary (abstract, ½ page) of your project, as well as a video (2 min. and 30 MB maximum, accepted formats: mpg, mp4, mpeg, mov, avi, wmv, flv) explaining who you are, where you are from and why you think your idea could change the world or make a difference in the future. Finalists will be chosen from all submissions received by the submission deadline. Submissions must be received by July 19, 2019 to be considered. All submissions must be sent in English to scienceslamtanzania@gmail.com
with the following information:
● Name
● Date of birth
● E-mail address
● Telephone number
● Name of school / university
● Please include a copy of your student ID with your submission.
NOTE: If files are too large, please send them via Wetransfer (www.wetransfer.com) to the same address.
In both cases: Please send all documents in one Zip-folder. Submitted files should be named as follows:
⇨ VIDEO-FILE_title of your submission_your name
⇨ TEXT-FILE_title of your submission_your name
What else do I need to consider?
● All video —and text —files submitted for the competition must be a product of your own work! ● You can only submit one entry.
● We will not accept any entries arriving after July 19, 2019.
● We cannot accept incomplete entries or entries which do not fit in the above mentioned specifications.
● Submitted material will not be returned regardless of its format.
● DW or ITV also reserve the right to use, present or publish any of the entries.
By participating you declare that you accept these terms and conditions.
What can I win?
First Prize: MacBook
Second Prize: iPad
Third Prize: iPhone
Who picks the winners?
Finalists will be chosen from all submissions received by the submission deadline.
Step 1: An expert jury will choose the finalists who will be invited to the event in Dar es Salaam on August 2. Attendance is required to take part in the Science Slam. The jury will evaluate the entries based on criteria such as clarity, scientific merit and research, innovation, authenticity and originality of the chosen approach and the chosen story. Decisions of the jury are final and are not subject to legal appeal.
Step 2: At the event, finalists will have 10 minutes to convince the audience using everything available to them. And that’s important – because the audience is the jury and will be choosing the winner at the end of the event. So be creative, captivating and concise. You can use anything that makes your presentation more interesting: visual aides, live experiments, assistants or audience participation.
Just make it exciting! Please note that you are free to choose English or Swahili as the language for your live presentation. Good luck to all participants! We are looking forward to receiving your submissions.
